Cordova

Apache Cordova (formerly PhoneGap) is a mobile application development framework originally created by Nitobi. Adobe Systems purchased Nitobi in 2011, rebranded it as PhoneGap, and later released an open source version of the software called Apache Cordova.

Both Apache cordova and Phonegap are framework for mobile application development.
Apache Cordova is a platform for building native mobile applications using HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

PhoneGap is an HTML5 app platform that permits anyone to author native applications with web technologies and get access to APIs and app stores.

PhoneGap is a distribution of Apache Cordova. You can envision Apache  Cordova as the engine that powers PhoneGap,same as how WebKit is  the engine that powers Chrome or Safari.

PhoneGap will always  endure to be free, open source software and will always remain standing as a free distribution  of Apache Cordova.

Presently, the only difference is in the name of the download package and this will stick around  so for some time.
